- Support Yourself
Caregiving can be an isolating activity. A 2006 study published in the Family Caregiver Alliance reveals that nearly “40 to 70% of caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression” and isolation. Thus, one of the best ways to combat these feelings of depression is to support yourself!
Find a support group to share your feelings. AARP is one of the many places that offer an online community for caregivers. There is also Caregivers Connect, where you can share personal stories and troubles with a group of like-minded individuals.
- Set Time for Yourself
When it comes to personal wellbeing, it’s imperative to allot time for self-care. Take stock of things that bring you joy. This can be a good book, time spent in the garden, or a nice soak in the tub. The goal is to schedule the time to take care of yourself.
At the end of the day, if you are not your best, this will affect your work. So, when it comes to self-care, “Parks and Recreation” said it best: you need to “treat yo’self!”
- Reach Out When You Need Help
This may be the most important step, because it tends to be the hardest. If you are finding yourself feeling overwhelmed, it’s unequivocally important to reach out for help. Remember that you are not alone, and that you can ask for a lifeline when you feel as though you are drowning.
